Broadclyst Twinning Association

Broadclyst Twinning Association was formed in 2006 to foster friendships and exchanges between the residents of Broadclyst and Plobannalec-Lesconil on the south coast of Brittany. Plobannalec is mainly a farming community and Lesconil a traditional fishing village. Together they form one municipality.

So far there have been several visits to France and several here. On second French visit in May 2010, we formally signed the Charter of Friendship between our two communities, with festivities, a barn dance and a thoroughly enjoyable four day visit.

In France we were treated to a roller coaster of feasts, visits, music and great hospitality. Some of us cycled there in 2009 and were accompanied by French cyclists for the second leg of the journey

Children are very much at the forefront of the twinning.  Currently children from Broadclyst Primary School are corresponding with pupils from one of the two French schools, École Primaire St. Joseph. A group of pupils, teachers and parents from St Joseph came to Devon in spring 2010 and spent some time at Broadclyst Primary School which is very keen to further this exchange.

In 2010, we had a visit from a youth football team from Plobannalec-Lesconil. A friendly match was organised with the Broadclyst U11s. The only pity was that the visitors were all 13 and 14! In the summer of 2011 a group of 11 and 12 year olds from Plobannalec-Lesconil came to camp in Ashclyst Forest for a week and visit the area.  They were delighted and keen to repeat the experience.  Meanwhile, plans are underway for a group of Broadclyst children to visit the sea activity centre in Lesconil.  Several children from PL have spent several weeks in Broadclyst, improving their English.

In May 2011, we made an activity-packed return visit to sign the Charter in France, accompanied by members of Cantilena choir who are now corresponding independently with a choir in PL and organising their own visits.  In May 2012, PL visited  us along with members of their art society and we unveiled a new road sign celebrating the twinning, engaged our twins in skittles (they beat us!), had an art exhibition, a medieval banquet. Our guests were delighted with their visit and left already planning our return in 2013.  Vive l'entente cordiale!
