Cllr Jason Jackson - Elected Member.

I have been living in Broadclyst Village for nine years now with my wife and son who attends the nursery at Broadclyst Primary School. I was previously living in Pinhoe for 11 years and prior to all this I was born and raised in Fareham a town about 8 miles west of Portsmouth.

I have worked and continue to work in Insurance for 28 years in a variety of positions including working over in Jersey for a number of months before moving to work for a global Insurance Broker in Exeter. I now work for a National Insurance Company based out of London.

As far as interests are concerned I was in the Territorial Army (Princess of Wales Regiment) based in Portsmouth for a while prior to moving to Exeter. I love history spanning most ages but in particular Victorian Politics and Europe 1789-1989. I was lucky at College to have 2 excellent tutors in these subjects and consequently continue to read literature and in the final year of studying a part time history degree with the Open University. I also like football and Golf.

I like to play an active part in Broadclyst, when work allows, and after moving from Pinhoe I realised how little I knew about the village and decided the best way to gain an appreciation of its history and character was to join the Parish Council. Being involved has definitely enhanced my understanding of Community issues that I was unaware of previously.

Cllr Nigel Baker - Elected Member.

I returned from living in Hong Kong, for 20 years, in 2003. I worked in Hong Kong, first for the HK Government Transport Department, for 12 years and for the following 8 years for the Ferrari and Maserati Distributors. This work took me all over Asia which exposed me to all manner of cultures and situations.

On my return to the UK I settled in Torquay and worked at Exeter College, lecturing in Motor Vehicle Studies. In 2012 I moved to Dog Village and retired in 2013.

I became interested in the traffic situation in Dog Village and after assailing the Highways Department and Devon and Cornwall Police Department with opinions and suggestions on a lone basis, (with not much success), I joined the Traffic Group of the Parish Council on the premise that there was more clout available within the group.

I joined the Parish Council in 2015 and have found the work and topics very interesting and especially rewarding with the Traffic Group. I continue to work with the Traffic Group and hope to contribute more with both the Parish Council and Traffic Group.

WESTCLYST

Cllr Sarah Vaughan - Elected Member.

We moved to West Clyst when my husband retired in 2005. My career has been varied. I have worked as a hydrologist and river modeller in South Africa, the UK and Denmark. In Denmark, I became involved in translating, teaching English, and the use of online technology in teaching. I stayed in this field on returning to the UK, first at Leeds University before moving to London where I held various teaching, administrative and managerial roles in Higher Education.
After moving here, I joined the SW based woodland charity, The Silvanus Trust, as Director.  I retired from this post in 2013 in order to spend more time with my family.
I have also taken the opportunity to get to know my community better and, by becoming a Parish Councillor,  I hope to be able to apply my varied skills and experience to the parish’s activities and development. I am particularly interested in community social enterprise and am invovled in the development of the Neighbourhood Plan.

Duties
Chair of Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group.
Member of Staffing, Comms, and Emergency Planning Committees.

Cllr Henry Gent - Elected Member

I have lived all my life at the Broadclyst farm which I now run (apart from 6 years at university).  Farming has changed:  bigger machines, more mechanisation, more specialisation, and fewer people in the fields.  We have gone from a mixed farm selling eggs, sheep, pigs, cattle, and swedes, potatoes, sugar beet, malting barley, wheat, cider apples, and withy spars, to just selling milk, cattle, and chicken.  From a small age I have been aware of Broadclyst, because parents, grandparents, and even my great-grandfather have all taken an active part in local public affairs.  My parents took me often to all kinds of public events in the village, and I grew up listening to talk about “the village” and “the council”.  At the same time, living , as we do, at the Exeter end of the parish, I went to school in Pinhoe, then Exeter, then Tiverton, and I have ended up fond of the wider area.

For the first few decades of married life the combination of farm work and children was in my case mostly sufficient, but in recent years I have enjoyed having the time to get more involved.  Growing up in Broadclyst in the early 60s, the war had happened only 20 years previously, and reminders were all around:  the John Lewis site was still a bomb site; the men on the farm carried their lunch in rucksacks which had carried gas masks; Sir Richard Acland was still a stunning orator, and indeed the Killerton Estate was still structured much as it had been when it belonged to the Aclands.  Many good things in the parish continue almost unchanged:  landscape of fields and woodlands, Killerton stone built into farmyards, rural cottages, villages rows and larger homes. Good sensible buildings have aged well and become beautiful.

Yet we now live in a completely different society, and we face a fast changing economy and environment, a growing population, an expanding city.  We find our best options often lie in technology that would have seemed incredible to our grandfathers, even to Sir Richard.  The parish council is a tiny fish in this ocean of debate about the future, but there is more satisfaction in doing a small thing, than in doing nothing about a big thing.

The parish council is rather like farm work:   when there is a lot to be done, the only thing to do is make a small start.

Duties
Chair of Comms and Traffic Committees.
Member of Emergency planning committee.

External representation
Exeter International Airport Consultative Committee representative.
Broadclyst Allotment Association Parish Council representative
Broadclyst Twinning Association Parish Council representative
Joint Parish Broadclyst Parish Council representative

BLACKHORSE

Cllr Neil Bromley - Elected Member.

I studied art at college for six years, finally graduating with H.N.D. in Calligraphy and Heraldry at Reigate School of Art in 1995. Whilst studying at Reigate I was awarded two bursaries from the Worshipful Company of Scriveners and the Company of Painters/Stainers.

I returned to Devon, my home county and established myself in the Exeter area as an Heraldic Artist and Illuminator. My first commission was from The Mayors Office at Exeter City Council, producing Illuminated Address’, and I was elected a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen.

I have also been elected a craft member of the Society of Heraldic Arts and continue to produce high end Heraldic art for clients world wide using traditional skills. My work is produced from my Studio at home on Blackhorse Lane.

I moved to Lowerstone Cottage, Blackhorse Lane over 15 years ago and have enjoyed living here and the surrounding farm land for all of my time. I have seen the area change in so many ways and have always taken an interest in these developments.

Since Blackhorse Lane is in the middle of so many proposed large scale developments I felt it necessary to have a voice for this small but friendly lane. I hope that I may be able to highlight the concerns of many residence and to assure them that we do have a voice within the parish. I am committed to working with the parish and I am involved in both the traffic and planning committee's.

Duties
Member of Planning and Traffic Committees.

WESTWOOD

Cllr Eleanor Rylance-

I have lived in rural Broadclyst since 2004, and been a member of Broadclyst Parish Council since 2007 apart from a spell away while my older three children were completing GCSEs and A levels and their new sister was a toddler.  A trained teacher (secondary modern languages), I now work from home as a freelance translator from French and Spanish to English, which has been a very useful in enabling me spend time on village matters whilst still doing the "day job".  I edited the Broadsheet for three years, and am Chair of Broadclyst Twinning Association, and run a monthly film club that helps finance twinning activities.   Now that my youngest is firmly at primary school, I've been able to rejoin the Parish council and am delighted to represent my lovely hamlet of Westwood ("the independent republic of Westwood"!).

Cllr Benedict Lock-

I have  lived in Broadclyst for 14 years, where I moved with my family when my father moved down to Devon with the Met Office. Now aged 23, I am a graduate in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, have an MsC in Nanotechnology, and am a prospective PhD student in physics (specifically Nanotechnology).  As the youngest person on an already comparatively young parish council (by over 20 years), I have a rather different outlook than most on council matters.
